MindQuest Uses Minecraft to Enhance Student Wellbeing

In an innovative approach to enhancing student mental health, Creative Active Lives, a Birmingham-based organization, is using Minecraft to create MindQuest, a virtual world where students can explore and improve their wellbeing. Thanks to a grant from the WCIT Charity, this groundbreaking project aims to seamlessly integrate mental health assessments within a popular gaming platform.
Supporting Wellbeing Through Technology
The MindQuest project effectively merges education with technology by incorporating validated wellbeing tools like the Stirling Children’s Wellbeing Scale and WEBWMS directly into the Minecraft setting. This integration allows for an unconventional, yet effective means for educators to monitor student mental wellbeing without the administrative burden of traditional paper or digital questionnaires.
By storing responses securely in the cloud, teachers have streamlined access to crucial information, enhancing their ability to support students’ mental health needs while preserving data confidentiality. Moreover, by embedding the wellbeing assessments within a familiar game environment, the process becomes a more engaging and less stressful experience for students.
Collaboration and Development
MindQuest’s development was catalyzed by sessions in the West Midlands, funded by the Sandwell Council of Voluntary Organisations Vision 2030 Fund. These sessions highlighted the potential of an in-game survey method over traditional approaches, emphasizing reduced stress and increased reliability.
The Creative Active Lives team collaborates with Minecraft education consultant Dan Noble and Ellie Finch from PlayMode Academy to fine-tune the educational aspects of the project. Rachel Conlisk, the director, takes pride in the involvement of her daughter, who co-developed the working prototype while a computer science student at the age of 17.
As the initiative moves forward, it exemplifies a growing trend of using digital platforms not only as educational tools but also as mediums that cater to the unique needs of neurodivergent students. MindQuest's innovative intersection of gaming and mental health represents a promising frontier in educational technology and wellbeing strategies.
